elegy

elegy
elegy, eulogy
An elegy was originally a lament for the dead, of which literary examples are Milton's Lycidas (1637) and Shelley's Adonais (1821). In the course of time, it came to mean any sorrowful poem or one written in the metre associated with elegies, as in Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard (1751). A eulogy was originally a speech honouring a dead person, and has come to mean more generally anything formally written or spoken as a personal tribute.

Modern English usage. 2014.
